JOKER IS THE MOST COMIC FILM FOR OSCAR OF ALL TIMES

Why are stuntmen wronged at the Oscars?

This annual event is held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and aims to reward the best productions, actors, technicians and films that were on display in the year prior to its edition.

But as not everything is flowers in the world of show biz, one or the other category ends up being wronged and as every year the forgotten ones are the stuntmen.

These professionals who give their lives for art end up being left out of the way by the absence of a specific award to celebrate the valorization of their work, which makes the shirt sweat, literally, so that the magic of cinema happens, in addition to preserving the physical integrity of the big stars on the big screen.

A great acquaintance of Hollywood studios, veteran man Jake Gill, promises to make a splash in the next edition of the awards according to American newspapers.

He who was responsible for coordinating action scenes in films like Fast and Furious and Jumanji is a strong supporter of the stunt class and has been fighting for 27 years for greater recognition of the stunt profession by Oscar organizers.

The last memory to the class at the cinema party is exactly 53 years old, when the first stuntman in the history of world cinema and champion of rodeos, Yakima Cannut received the statuette in honor of the creation of the profession and contributions made to the film industry.

DEMOCRACY IN VERTIGEM: BRAZILIAN DOCUMENTARY IS PRE-INDICATED AT OSCAR 2020

Stuntmen In Brazil

Since then, in the midst of protests, controversies, extremely high fees, a lot has happened, but not for Brazil. Unfortunately, this profession, which involves great risks and adrenaline, is still little known and valued on Brazilian soil.

Modest advances have happened compared to the giants of the North American film industry. In a brief analysis, we can see that there are several factors that have kept Brazil positioned miles away from the panorama of American cinema productions.

One of the reasons without a doubt is the high cost of production in the realization of an action scene, such as the purchase of safety items and imported raw materials for making high quality special effects.

Another factor verified was the late appearance of a preparatory training center that gathered all the necessary information so that new talents could emerge in the area, meeting the most diverse profiles.

It is necessary that the Brazilian market learns from those who made history and does not repeat the same mistakes, in addition to being attentive to meet this new demand and its requirements.

The dangers of the profession

In 2017, the United States experienced a significant increase in the number of work accidents resulting from the hiring of inexperienced stuntmen, all due to the growth in new job openings in the production of entertainment content for television.

It is obvious that like any new profession, many doubts will still arise and the professional x market relationship should be shaped and adapted to this new reality that undoubtedly should grow considerably with new productions in the national scenario and the arrival of new streaming platforms in the parents.

It is not enough just to have the courage to work professionally in an action scene, it takes a lot of training, studies in martial arts, theater, experience and practice of various extreme sports, defensive driving, experience in handling weapons, knowledge of special effects and support and partnerships with public bodies such as the Army, Civil and Military Police, Fire Department, CET, among others.

Said Bruno Santana, Action Coordinator of the Stunt Tactical Training Center and Actors

The stunt career in our country still does not have a strong representation and to guarantee the respect and the rights of the professional.

The professional stuntman must first seek the professional assistance of someone specializing in the provision of artistic services and negotiation of fees for the advertising, television and film markets and secondly, legal guidance so that there are no contractual doubts.

explains Marcos Mascaretti of the Royal Actors agency, responsible for the career management of professionals at the Stunt Tactical Training Center and Actors.

Although far from the high fees paid by American studios, some gaps still need to be filled along this journey, but it is always good to remember some important points regarding our reality in the labor market.
