From July 1 (Wednesday), registration for the Essay Award promoted by the magazine Instituto Moreira Salles. The main objective of the contest is to stimulate the production of essays in Portuguese. The deadline for registration ends on the day September 1st.
Three unpublished texts will be selected. The first place will receive R $ 10,000, the second, R $ 7,000, and the third, R $ 4,000. The contemplated essays will also be published in the magazine edition that comes out in November 2020.
Having revealed important names in the 2011 and 2013 editions, the award is reissued at a time when, more than ever, boldness of speculation and freedom of reflection are necessary for intellectual debate, important elements of the essay, non-fiction genre the magazine has dedicated itself to since its creation in 2009.
Who can compete for the prize?
Portuguese-speaking authors, residing in Brazil or abroad, who are unpublished in books or who have at most one work published in any genre are eligible to compete. The texts, of up to 30 thousand characters (counting spaces), must be entirely unpublished until the announcement of the result. The theme is free.
The participation of authors who have any connection with the research activities, publications or consultancies of the Moreira Salles Institute is prohibited. To participate, candidates must send their texts, signed by pseudonyms, between 1/7 and 1/9, on the website of (www.revistaserrote.com.br). The complete regulation will be available on the website from 1/7.
The essays will be appreciated without the jury knowing the author’s identity, which will only be revealed to those involved after the selection is finalized. The commission responsible for evaluating the originals will be announced in the future on the website and on the social networks of the magazine and IMS.
In the previous editions of the award, the winners were: architect Francesco Perrotta-Bosch (2013), researcher André Antônio Barbosa (2013), writer Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida (2013), philosophers Lucianno Ferreira Gatti (2011), Rodrigo Nunes (2011) and researcher Carlos Alberto Shimote Martins (2011).
