Studio Ghibli fans will have to wait a long time to check out Hayao Miyazaki’s new work: the film How Do You Live?, inspired by the eponymous book by Yoshino Genzaburo, is currently in the process of animation, but it should take at least another three years to be ready.
According to information shared by producer Toshio Suzuki in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the production of the film did not stop even in the midst of the pandemic, but it will take time. He says:
“We are still drawing everything by hand, but it takes more time to complete a film because we are drawing more pictures. So there are more drawings to draw than before. When we were making My Neighbor Totoro, we had only eight animators and we did it in eight months. For the current film that Miyazaki is working on, we have 60 animators, but we could only create one minute of animation in a month. That means, 12 months a year, you get 12 minutes on film. In fact, we’ve been working on this film for three years, which means we have 36 full minutes so far. We hope it will end in the next three years. “
Suzuki also says that How Do You Live? it will be a great and fantastic story. The plot based on the 1937 book narrates “about a boy who comes of age when he lives with his uncle after his father’s death,” according to IndieWire. Miyazaki had already announced his retirement, but returned to work for this film that will be dedicated to his grandson.
“Many directors make films repeatedly throughout their careers as they get older. When Miyazaki came back and said that I wanted to make a film again, he actually said it wasn’t a great idea, because he had already done so much. You can’t come back and do something you’ve done in the past, you need to do something different. One of the ideas that came up was: why not spend more time and spend more money [para fazer um filme]? So, this is one of the new approaches. “, Comments Suzuki
