If you’ve seen Marvel’s space opera, Guardians of the Galaxy, you’re probably interested in the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2. Here is everything you need to know about Chris Pratt’s blockbuster franchise…
The Guardians of the Galaxy cast vol.2: Familiar and new faces
Peter Quill / Chris Pratt’s Starlord, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Dave Bautista’s Drax, Vin Diesel’s Groot and Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Racoon are officially back in the sequel as confirmed by Gunn on his ever-trusted Facebook page. Yondu Udonta by Michael Rooker has a new hairstyle – or whatever that thing is on his head – and will become an official member of the Guardians.
Benicio Del Toro’s scary character, the Collector, appears to be the only relevant character – and survivor – who will not return until now.
Karen Gillan is returning as Thanos’ non-favorite daughter, Nebula, with Gunn promising that she will be a very important character in the film. According to Saldana, she will be even more “resentful and bitter” than before.
There are also rookies. Say hello to Pom Klementieff, a French actress best known in Hollywood for her role in the remake of Oldboy: Days of Vengeance directed by Spike Lee. After much debate and rumors, Gunn confirmed that she will play Mantis – a psychic woman who was born destined to be the prophesied savior of a race of alien trees. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described her as someone who “has never met other people before and makes Drax look like the most experienced person in the world”.
The director also confirmed another rumor: Kurt Russell will be in the film – as seen in the last trailer. He is the father of the Star Lord, Ego, the Living Planet. He is literally an intelligent planet with a face, a beard and big dreams of conquest. Although many are horrified by the idea of a planet copulate with Quill’s mom, we already know that Russell will appear in human form in the film.
(In addition, it was found that Fox actually controlled Ego’s image rights, with the studios proving they can get along and agreed to make a trade-off between the Living Planet and some elements in Deadpool).
Elizabeth Debicki – best remembered for the character Victoria Vinciguerra in The UNCLE Agent – will play a lesser known cosmic character, Ayesha. and Chris Sullivan – from The Knick – and Tommy Flanagan – from Sons of Anarchy – were added to the cast in mysterious roles.
And Sylvester Stallone will play a “very, very important role”. He was seen interacting with Yondu in the Comic-Con trailer.
Gunn is returning as both a director and a screenwriter. He tweeted when he had completed his first draft and has remained very active about the film ever since. Right after the Guardians of the Galaxy panel vol. 2 at the San Diego Comic-Con 2014, he suggested to newcomers to the team that “at least one more Guardian of comics” would appear in his script.
With more than a dozen potential candidates, from the gloriously named Aldrif Odinsdottir – also known as Angela, a less impressive nickname, the one that belonged to the Spawn comics and is now on Marvel for complicated copyright issues and American jerks – to the equally gloriously named Phyla-Vell, there are a lot of conjectures to be made. And the fingers crossed for more Cosmo, the space dog.
The plot of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2: “I am your father”
Gunn revealed that the film is set just two months after the first film, which presumably puts its events before the Avengers split from Captain America: Civil War events.
Speaking to Collider, he said: “It is both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some characters”.
Referring to Peter Quill’s almost mythological father suggested at the end of the first film, he added: “We learned a lot more about parents in the second film, so we focused a lot on that.”
Gunn also spoke about the fact that Quill’s father will not be the same character as in the original comics, Prince J’son of Spartoi. Now we know that he is really the aforementioned Ego, the Living Planet, which Gunn assures us is not a spoiler.
In addition, Chris Pratt told Spy Digital that reading the script for the sequel “brought tears to his eyes”. We don’t know if this is directly related to finding out that he has tectonic plates and magma in his family tree.
And Kurt Russell is very happy. “It could be one of the best names for a character I’ve ever shot,” he said.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be mapping the roller coaster of emotions that the Starlord feels about his recently revealed father, as well as exploring the family relationships forged between the team in the first film.
There are suggestions that Peter Quill could have been physically altered in some way after his exposure to the Orb / Infinity Stone in the battle against Ronan.
What appears to be one of the highest female accolades in a Marvel film: Gunn has promised that he will “get through” the Bechdel Test.
Groot, however, will play a minor role – so to speak – as Baby Groot did not fully grow until the beginning of the film.
We also know that it will not be a story about the Infinity Stones and that Thanos – Josh Brolin – will not appear again. In fact, Gunn said he was authorized to operate practically free from the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We will really have to wait until Avengers: Infinity War to see Thanos and the alliance between Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. By the way, the Infinite War will take place on Earth.
Gunn explicitly announced that “[os Guardiões da Galáxia] will not join the Hulk “, something that has been echoed on the other side of Marvel’s coin, with Gavião Arqueiro himself, Jeremy Renner, adding:” There are already many people in the Avengers, do you want more ?! Chris Pratt, I love this guy. I love what they did with the Guardians in fact, I thought it was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time.
Not to mention that the Hulk would end up solving the film alone or simply blowing up the Guardians’ ship with a flick.
The villains of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2: More familiar and new faces
With the plot details still in the dark, not much is known about the Guardians of the Galaxy villains vol. 2. Ayesha – Elizabeth Debicki – is likely to be at least one of the threats the gang has to deal with.
We caught our first glimpse of her in the Superbowl trailer, and James Gunn describes her as:
“Ayesha is the golden High Priestess of a genetically perfect people called“ Sovereign ”- Sovereign in free translation. She is not a woman you want to be in trouble with – she and everyone else are extraordinarily deadly. ”
The Gillan Nebula, shamefully underutilized in the first film, is now taking center stage in the sequel, with Gunn saying, “Nebula is an important character”, and Gillan promises that we will see “a much more human side”. Something funny to think of an alien cyborg.
As already mentioned, the great Thanos will have no other participation in the new film before his role as antagonist in Avengers: Infinity War.
“First of all, it’s about two sisters,” Gunn told ComicBook.com. “It’s not about the sisters and their father, it’s about two sisters and what the sisters’ problems were with each other, and yes, some of these things were caused by being created by the tyrant stepfather, but it’s really not about Thanos and, frankly, I just wasn’t inspired to put him in the movie. ”
“I kind of go with my stomach on these things and it was not what I wanted to do. It wasn’t the most fun part of the movie last time for me and I really didn’t want to do it this time. ”
As for Quill’s father: in the comics he has always been portrayed at least as a big asshole – and at his worst, a dangerous megalomaniac. Gunn is mixing up his identity, but he can still maintain his villainous traits – which would certainly be a blow to our little orphaned Starlord.
Gunn said he would love to introduce the villains of Marvel Annihilator and Kang the Conqueror, but unfortunately the first is definitely a villain from the Fantastic Four and therefore a property of Fox, and Gunn thinks Kang would be overkill. He is more of an Avengers character as far as we know, but nothing prevents him from appearing in the Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3.
It was also revealed that a certain actor refused a role – the role of villain, no less: Matthew McConaughey said no to Marvel. Too bad, he’s a good actor
