THE Netflix released today (15) the first trailer and the first photos of Clemency – The Story of Cyntoia Brown a documentary about the case of the young woman who was arrested and convicted of murdering a 43-year-old man who went out with her just to have sex with her.
In 2004, Cyntoia Denise Brown, then 16, was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee charged with the crime. She was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison. Cyntoia’s fate seemed sealed.
The documentary will show the complexity of someone who was the product of a family with cases of violence against women in three generations. It also portrays how, in 2019, after almost 10 years of judicial appeals, Governor Bill Haslam complied with his request for clemency. The decision came after a slow process of changing Tennessee laws to convict minors. Also essential were Cyntoia’s demonstrations of maturity, education and good behavior as a prisoner.
Direction and production of Daniel H. Birman, with editing and production of Megan E. Chao.
