WOMEN’S POWER IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC: MEET MOV.E WONDER’S HEADLINERS
Diplo at the Carnival of Mirante
Thomas Wesley Pentz, aka Diplo, is almost a Brazilian, at least at heart. He has been in the country several times and has made several collabs with national artists, such as Anitta, Pabllo Vittar and Iza.
He is considered an imposing figure in the world electronic scene, for dividing his time as a DJ, producer and entrepreneur, and moving with relevance between the mainstream and the underground.
In addition to the solo project, he is also part of Major Lazer (with Jillionaire and Ape Drums), Jack Ü (duo formed with Skrillex), LSD (alongside Labrinth and Sia), and Silk City (duo with Mark Ronson).
Diplo has a history with funk carioca that started when two Argentine friends were addicted to the sound and presented the artist with a tape with the tracks. He was fascinated by the rhythm and came personally to Brazil to get to know the genre.
Attending the dances and visiting the peripheries, Diplo absorbed the sound, which was then used in his debut album in 2004, by Big Dada, when he had already consolidated himself through the influential parties he organized in southern Philadelphia.
He even worked with MIA on three albums. And in 2005, he launched the label Mad Decent to show the fascinating sounds he found when traveling the world.
Since then, he became a hit-maker with nine Grammy nominations, winning in 2015 the “Best Dance Recording” categories with “Where Are Ü Now” and “Best Dance / Electronic Album” with, and in 2018 with the track “Electricity” as “Best Dance Recording”.
The artist has been doing more than 300 shows around the world with his projects and rising to great positions in the most famous music charts.
