A conflict between two entities from completely different fields started thanks to bats. DC Comics will sue the Spanish team Valencia for using a stylized bat as a brand during the celebration for the club’s centenary, completed this Tuesday.
The American comic book publisher considers that the cartoon propagated by the Spanish club could confuse people, since it looks like the symbol of Batman, which belongs to DC.
The publisher hired a Spanish law firm specializing in intellectual and industrial property to take care of the case, which would have already filed for representation based on Article 8.1 of the European Union’s trademark regulation.
It will not be the first time that this conflict has happened. DC sued Valencia for the same reason previously, in 2014, but was unsuccessful in its demand.
Valencia intends to defend itself in the same way that it did five years ago: claiming that the bat has been a symbol of the club since 1921, while Batman was created only in 1939. “It is a mere formalism and we are absolutely calm. It will have no transcendence or repercussions. The shield will not be affected and there will be no legal consequences, ”wrote a spokesman for the team to the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial.
