Father of actors Eric Douglas and film producer Joel Douglas, he was nominated 3 times for the Oscar for best actor for the films O InvincĂ­vel (1950), Assim Estava Escrito (1953) and Sede de vivre (1957).

He was married to Diana Douglas from 1943 until 1951, until in 1954 he exchanged vows with Anne Buydens, with whom he remained married until the day of his death.
