Universal Pictures has just taken a huge loss with the release of Cats in theaters.
Based on the popular Broadway musical, many expectations were placed on the film, which cost the studio about $ 90 million and features big names in film and music, such as Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson and many others.
However, none of this was enough to please the public who, since the first images, already showed dissatisfaction with the project’s look – and became even more dissatisfied with the final result of the work.
With only 15% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, the musical earned $ 6.5 on its US debut, making it onto the list of 20 worst premieres in cinema history according to Box Office Mojo.
The international debut brought only US $ 4.4 million, and although the feature has not yet been released in some countries, such as Brazil, it will be very difficult to even cover production costs.
The story tells of a tribe of cats, the Jellicles, which annually meet to elect the next to ascend to Heaviside Laywer, where they will have a better life. To be chosen, they must convince the leader, Deuteronomy, with their life stories.
The film hits theaters in Brazil on December 25, following Christmas.
