BBB20 as a reflection of society: Beyond entertainment

BBB20 as a reflection of society: Beyond entertainment

The twentieth edition of BBB it has been breaking audience records (so much so that for the first time Globo decided to extend the program for 3 more days, now ending on April 27) and is one of the most talked about subjects on social media since its inception.

social issues on bbb

The popularity of reality has risen throughout this season social questions very relevant, such as:

The “fidelity test” strategy and extreme machismo

Right at the beginning of the program some boys from the house (Petrix, Lucas, Felipe and Hadson) got together to seduce the committed girls (Mari and Bianca) with the aim of burning their image for being unfaithful. This strategy was called a fidelity test and made many girls in the house angry, and viewers were eliminating the men one by one.

It was not just this “game strategy” that made several boys in the house receive the label of sexists inside and outside the house, some other attitudes such as sexist statements, verbal violence and even sexual harassment, committed by Pyong and Petrix .

Racism against Babu and Thelma

racism on bbb20

This is the most delicate subject to touch, as it involves participants called “sensible fairies”, the hegemonic and most popular block of reality. A pity to be delicate, as the condemnation of racist expressions should be obvious.

Babu has been isolated from the house by the “hippie community” since the beginning of the reality and the developments have shown many unfortunate episodes such as: relativizing his intellectuality, calling him a monster and making fun of his comb. With Thelma, the most serious came from her friend Gizelly, who called her friend’s makeup “clay”.

In the case of machismo, the boys were eliminated one by one, but why haven’t people with racist attitudes in the program yet been convicted? Like, for example, when Manu Gavassi uttered a phrase considered even eugenicist, which referred to Daniel and Marcela having equal skin tones, and that it was “more pleasant”.

Structural homophobia

The subject of homophobia was little addressed, despite Marcela being openly bisexual. The homophobia present in the reality occurred in vocatives among the boys (among them Babu, Felipe, Lucas and Hadson) denounced by Manu Gavassi. They called themselves “viado” or “burglary”, which would have bothered people in the house. Manu pointed out to the men in the house that those attitudes were wrong and the matter died there.

Guilherme’s abusive relationship with Gabi

Guilherme and Gabi lived a typical example of an abusive relationship in the program. They lived in a cycle practically during their entire participation, where he disliked her, chose who she could be friends with in the house, spoke ill of her to everyone in the house, but did not want others to know that he caused the arguments that always ended with Gabi apologizing for something.

This type of relationship is very recurrent and many people are traumatized by these relationships for life.

As Big Brother Brasil fits as an entertainment program, many people leave aside facts like the ones mentioned above and focus only on the game. The only problem is that, in addition to entertainment, the BBB is a reality show, and we cannot let these behaviors be part of everyday life, we must condemn them all equally and have a lighter entertainment, free of prejudices and that becomes a reality show, not a horror show.

The program is in the final stretch, will everyone who committed injustice or prejudice throughout the program be eliminated?
