# BAFTA2020: the controversy in the indication and deconstruction in the spotlight

The BAFTA 2020 (British Academy Film Awards) ceremony took place yesterday, 02, at the Royal Albert Hall, in London. The award, which is considered a “British Oscar”, honors the best professionals and national and foreign films, but in this edition there was a perpetuation of the existing standards in the film industry.

After the list of nominees was released in January, the ceremony received criticism for its nominations and the hashtag # (Bafta Tão Branco) won Trends Topics on Twitter. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts was criticized for the lack of diversity, as most nominations were attended by white actors and actresses in its 2020 edition.

I’m not a racist, I’ve already rewarded two blacks! Without any shame in his face, “BAFTA” shuns controversy for ignoring blacks, Latinos and Asians in the acting categories, changing the cover photo to a rare opportunity where he gave an award to a black actor. # BAFTASoWhite #BAFTA pic.twitter .com / pXtrF7jX9a

Another question asked by the public was the absence of women in the category of Best Director. Films like “Adorable Women” and “A Farewell” were expected to be nominated. In addition to all these factors, actress Margot Robbie had a double nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actress for “The Scandal” and “Once upon a time in … Hollywood”. And the actress Scarlett Johansson was nominated in the category of Best Actress for “Story of a Wedding” and in Best Supporting Actress for “JoJo Rabbit” generating a great reaction on the part of the public that also waited for the nominations of the actresses Jennifer Lopez (The Scammers) and Lupita Nyong’o (We).

Lupita BURNED IN US and BAFTA preferred, for example, to indicate Scarlett and Margot TWICE each. It is not a lack of diversity, it is a lack of will. Shame. pic.twitter.com/b7aal9BCer

He stepped on the ball too ugly, BAFTA.

– Not indicating Lupita by “We” is an abysmal outrage!
– Indicate Margot twice, once for “Once upon a time …”, it is very clueless!
– Indicate Scarlett for “Jojo Rabbit”! ??
– If it was to indicate Florence, it was for “Midsommar”.

Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson did deserve to be nominated, BUT TWICE? They indicated TWO ACTRESSES TWICE and left Lupita Nyong’o out

Go take it in #BAFTA

In response to the repercussions, the organization blamed the film industry for the lack of representativeness of other ethnicities for prominent films. BAFTA award director Emma Baehr, in an interview with Variety magazine, said they would like “there to be more diversity in nominations, but that remains a problem across the industry.” The head of the BAFTA cinematographic committee, Marc Samuelson, stressed that the organization will carry out “a careful and detailed review inside and outside the association” to obtain changes in the 2021 edition.

The night spotlight was left with a lack of diversity. Upon receiving his award for Best Actor for “Joker”, Joaquin Phoenix did not hesitate to make a speech about racism present in the academy and the importance of deconstructing this act that continues to perpetuate.

“I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight. BAFTA has always been very supportive in my career and I appreciate that. But I have to say that I also feel conflicted [ao aceitar], because many of my fellow actors who deserve it don’t have the same privilege. I think we send a very clear message to people of color that they are not welcome here. I don’t think anyone wants a brochure or preferential treatment. People just want to be recognized, appreciated and respected for their work. This is not a hypocritical condemnation, I am part of the problem, we have to do a hard job to really understand systemic racism. I think it is the obligation of the people who created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the same ones who are going to dismantle it. This is our business.

Visibly ashamed of the situation, Phoenix left the stage without carrying his statuette with him. The video of that moment ended up going viral on social networks and some personalities thanked the actor for his position.

Actress Viola Davis made a post on her Instagram congratulating Phoenix: “! # GreatDiscourseBAFTA ”
